At the New Brunswick Business Council, our purpose has never been more clear.
For our members, this work is deeply personal. They care about their communities and the future of our province. Our new Strategic Plan is about sharpening that focus.
New Brunswick faces challenges that require thoughtful, long-term solutions rather than short-term quick fixes. Whether we consider our changing demographics, ongoing labour challenges, complex regulatory environment, or productivity opportunities, these factors have shaped our economy for years. When we address them deliberately and work collaboratively with a long-term perspective, they become pathways to building a stronger and more resilient New Brunswick.
The Strategic Plan represents the shift in conversation we want to drive.
Our members lead some of the province's largest and most dynamic organizations. What unites them is their shared commitment to New Brunswick. Their success connects directly to the success of the province. When the province thrives, businesses thrive. And when businesses thrive, communities flourish.
This understanding forms the foundation of our Strategic Plan, built around four strategic objectives:
1. Talent2. Business Environment
3. Productivity
4. Mindset
Together, these areas capture what truly moves the dial on growth and competitiveness. Tackled effectively, they can lift New Brunswick to new levels of opportunity and prosperity.
Developing Our Greatest Asset
To bring our Strategic Plan to life, we begin with our greatest asset: people.
Our talent strategy focuses on ensuring we have the right people in the right places at the right time. Supporting participation across all communities remains essential so that every New Brunswicker has the opportunity to contribute meaningfully. This involves reskilling and upskilling our workforce while partnering with colleges and universities to prepare graduates with the tools today's economy demands.
We must also thoughtfully leverage immigration and support newcomer integration. At the same time, we want to encourage those who have left New Brunswick to consider returning home. Success in this area means creating an environment where people can build rewarding careers, have an outstanding quality of life, and contribute to their communities.
These efforts strengthen not only individual businesses but the entire economic foundation of our province.
Creating Conditions for Success
With a strong workforce in place, we must also ensure the operating environment in the province allows businesses to grow, scale, and compete globally. This requires modern regulatory frameworks that protect our people and environment while simultaneously enabling new economic growth. We need continued infrastructure development in energy, transportation, and digital connectivity that connects us to markets and opportunities.
What’s more, tax and capital policies should be designed to encourage investment and innovation rather than create unnecessary barriers to growth. When businesses can access the resources and support, they need, they create employment opportunities and contribute to our shared prosperity.
Maximizing Our Resources
Productivity centers on doing more with what we have while building capacity for the future. This means helping businesses adopt technology and automation that enhances their competitiveness. It involves creating better access to capital for innovation and strategic investment and leveraging the power of data to make better business decisions.
Enhanced productivity boosts competitiveness and means higher margins and increased export opportunities for New Brunswick businesses. But it also means better wages for employees, improved working conditions, and expanded career opportunities across all sectors.
Embracing Our Potential
Even with the right tools and resources, progress depends on how we see ourselves as a province. Mindset may be our most important focus area. New Brunswick has tremendous assets and advantages, yet we sometimes underestimate our potential. Our province possesses natural resources, a strategic location, a skilled workforce, a strong knowledge industry and entrepreneurial spirit. We have every reason to think bigger, aim higher, and compete confidently on the global stage.
This strategic pillar recognizes business as a positive force for social good, celebrating our successes, and understanding that prosperity creates economic and social benefits that extend throughout our communities. When we embrace a global perspective while remaining rooted in our local strengths and values, we open doors to opportunities that can transform our economic landscape.
Confidence in our capabilities and potential drives everything else forward.
The Power of Connection
When these four pillars come together, their combined impact is even greater than the sum of their parts. A strong talent pipeline makes businesses more productive and competitive. An attractive business environment draws investment that creates quality employment. A growth mindset leads to expanded trade relationships and new opportunities.
When these elements work together effectively, they create momentum that builds sustainable prosperity for all New Brunswickers.
Our Role and Commitment
The Council's role in advancing this plan involves clear responsibilities. We will advocate with a unified voice on priorities that matter most to our province's future. We will convene leaders, partners, and communities around shared objectives. We will lead by example, inspiring businesses and decision makers to drive positive economic change.
However, we also recognize that collaboration is essential. No single organization can transform the province's economy on its own. Success requires genuine partnerships among businesses, governments, indigenous communities, educational institutions, communities, and workers. This collaborative approach is not optional but necessary for meaningful progress.
Our focus must remain sharp and disciplined, directed at the areas where we can make the biggest difference. We are not trying to be all things to all people. Rather, we are directing our energy where it can have the greatest impact on New Brunswick's long-term growth and competitiveness.
This strategy reflects our commitment to results that benefit all New Brunswickers, not just individual businesses or sectors.
Moving Forward Together
Ultimately, our Strategic Plan is a call to action for every New Brunswicker to think more ambitiously about the province’s future. It's an invitation to work together on what matters most. It's a commitment to prioritize the long-term prosperity of New Brunswick.
At the Council, we believe this approach serves not only business interests but the broader interests of all who call this place home.
When we succeed in building a stronger, more competitive economy, everyone benefits from the opportunities and prosperity that follow.
